This story of the Samaritan woman meeting Jesus at the well in the middle of the day comes immediately following the story of Nicodemus, an expert in law, meeting with Jesus at night. This juxtaposition really shows up the contrast between the two characters. Nicodemus, the educated one, comes to Jesus with what he knows, and leaves perplexed by spiritual truths that Jesus shares. The woman, interestingly nameless in the story, comes to Jesus with questions, and leaves with a very personal understanding of the deep spiritual freedom Jesus teaches. And she shares it with everyone she knows! We don't need to be afraid to challenge Jesus, in the light. Quite probably, we'll learn something new about ourselves and the world around us.
