If we think today's times are too hard, just read the story in John, which tells of broken bodies, occupation by a cruel foreign power, a bloody struggle for freedom. That story takes place at the time of the original Passover (read Exodus), in which the people flee in the night, believing in freedom even though they'd been slaves for 400 years. Just because God said so.
