Zoom out on Jesus' life. Matthew's telling of it focuses on what kind of king Jesus will be. He will be threatened and vulnerable (remember King Herod?). He won't look to be exalted above others (see Isaiah 42:1-4). He will always serve others (Matthew 17:5). In the story of Jesus' baptism, we have the opportunity to enter with Jesus into the cleansing waters.
