What causes famine? Drought (among many other geo-political forces). Reading the prophets, it feels like Israel was in a state of famine from God. They weren't reading the Scriptures, they weren't observing in the riturals, they weren't caring for the needy among them, they were cheating in the marketplace, (does it sound at all familiar?) God doesn't want that for God's children. God offers abundant life for us - fairness in the marketplace and he'll throw in an extra potato! Look for it!
